Shanghai Electronic News Gathering: ENG Shoot Planning
Shanghai electronic news gathering, often shortened to ENG, begins with an editorial assignment rather than a general promotional film brief. The crew needs to know what the story must establish, which contributors are available and how the material will reach the newsroom. A precise handover plan is as important as a concise shot list.
Identify the editorial owner
Name the producer or editor who sets the assignment and can answer questions during the shoot. Explain the subject, the essential interview points and any factual context the crew needs. Keep editorial decisions with that owner; a local camera team should not have to infer the broadcaster’s position from an informal collection of reference links.
Confirm access before the call
List the interview location, contributor contact and agreed filming window. Establish who is arranging access and any permissions relevant to the assignment. Do not assume that a corporate filming invitation also provides news access, accreditation or permission for unrelated coverage. If access remains unresolved, make that dependency visible in the schedule.
Use the receiving organisation’s specifications
Ask the newsroom for its current camera, audio and file requirements before selecting a package. Clarify whether it needs a finished package, interview selects, camera originals or a combination. Record names and titles accurately, and agree how translation notes or interview transcripts will be supplied if required.
Plan a traceable transfer
Set an expected delivery time, receiving contact and approved transfer method. Organise files so the editor can identify interviews, supporting visuals and separate audio without guessing. Agree whether the crew should retain a copy and for how long. A transfer is complete when the recipient confirms the material is usable, not merely when an upload begins.
